Introduction to transcranial doppler

Basic of ultrasound , Doppler waeforms, basic anatomy, the depth, sample volume and gain controls, the temporal window, vessel identification.

   
  Demonstration : finding the middle cerebral artery    
  Exercise 1 : finding MCA (practice on volunteers or each otherunder guidance)    
  Demonstration  : finding the anterior and posterior carebral arteries    
  Excercise 2 : finding the ACA and PCA (practice on volunteers or each otherunder guidance)    
 

Clinical applications and using TCD information

Flow and velocity, waveform shape and characteristics, counting emboli, clinical application eg subarachnoid haemorrahge, acute stroke, ischaemic vascular disease, carotid en arterectomy, artero-venous malformation, sickle cell disease, patent foramen ovale, carotid ligation, brain death (The detail contents of this talk will vary according to participants requirements)

13.30 Additional controls, windows and vessels.                                           
  The power, volume, direction, sweep and filter controls, the occipital and submandibular windows, using a headstrap, otimising the wave form, aliasing, TCD safely    
  Demonstration: finding the internal carotid, bassiler and vertebral arteries and/or use of headstraps    
  Exercise 3 : further MCA practice and/or finding other vessels and/or use of headstreps (practice on volunteers or each otherunder guidance)
